Cisco Unified IP Phone 7960G Interactive Training Tutorial

A big hurdle for someone with little or no experience in Networking is learning how to use and install your phone. I recommend starting with the basics of the phone and then move on to the installation and setup. I will Go through this in steps so its easy to find the information you want to read.

After seeing this in the forum several times I decided to include it on the front page. “What are the differences between the 7960 and the 7960g?“

Cisco 7960 Ip Phone	Cisco 7960G Universal Ip Phone

The “G” in 7960G stands for Global, the 7960G uses icons on the four soft keys instead of English text. This allows non-English speaking users to recognize their function more easily. Cisco has discontinued the production of the 7960 and only manufactures the 7960G now.

The 7960 was made before phones were required to have SIP Capability. The 7960g is SIP Compatible. Both phones were made before the IEEE standard took effect. The phones can only be(inline) POE powered by pre standard cisco switches or power cubes. The 7960g also is able to run on more software versions than the 7960. A difference between the 7960G and the 7940G is the 7960G has six programmable line and feature buttons whereas the 7940G only has two.

Cp-7960g  —  CP-7960g= These are basically the same phone. When a customer is buying a group of phones from Cisco they usually buy a certain amount to be installed immediately  and then they order a few extra just in case. . The = sign simply means that this phone was purchased as a spare or extra phone. Cisco simply does this to keep track of part #’s that have been sold but may not used right away.

Since this is a non biased reviews website I will say that there are cheaper telecom systems out there for the less demanding companies but c’mon, who wants 2nd class. The recent increase of selling competition in the cisco market has drasticaly brought down the price of used and refurbished cisco equipment. I recomend you always look for used equipment first, unless you are locked into contract with a Cisco reseller, they may void their warranty if they find out you have used equipment in your System. The equipment wont hurt your system but Cisco only wants it’s resellers to sell new equipment so Cisco keeps making money. If you are running on a sip or pbx system, we totaly recommend this phone to you.

Intro (3) About the 7960g phone

The Cisco Unified IP Phone 7960G is a full-featured IP phone primarily for managers, Call Centers, Offices, and executive needs. It provides six programmable line/feature buttons and four interactive soft keys that guide a user through call features and functions. Audio controls for duplex speakerphone, handset and headset. The Cisco Unified IP Phone 7960G also features a large, pixel-based LCD display. The display provides features such as date and time, calling party name, calling party number, and digits dialed. The graphic capability of the display allows for the inclusion of such features as XML (Extensible Markup Language) and future features.

The Cisco IP Phone 7960G offers four dynamic soft keys that guide a user through call features and functions. Built-in headset port and integrated Ethernet Switch are standard with the Cisco IP Phone 7960G. Also includes audio controls for full duplex speakerphone, handset and headset. It is multi-protocol capable (SCCP, SIP, MGCP). .
