The 7940 hasnt been upgraded in 5 years, the 7941 came out and now the 7942.The 7942 can be POE powered, The screen is higher quality and can support 3rd party applications, has a better speaker.
On the website's homepage, it states that the lowest price for a loaded and refurbished 7960G is priced at $118 from CMS Communication. But, in fact, Metroline Direct offers the same phone with all of its wonderful and useful capabilities at $115. This may only be a three dollar difference, but saving a buck wherever possible is always a plus. This phone as well as other Cisco series is offered by Metroline Direct and can be found at metrolinedirect.com. I hope this helps out anyone looking to buy a 7960G phone!

I just started trying to use the qualify=yes option on my Cisco 7960 SIP
phones. Of the 13 I have, 2 of them seem to loose their registration with
asterisk on a regular basis. I see lots of these lines:

-- Registered SIP '3030' at 62.74.107.1 port 58825 expires 60

in my console. But I only see them for 2 extensions. Never see them for the
other 11. All 13 phones have the exact same configuration with the exception
of the extension number in sip.conf and on the phone itself.

I have no idea why these 2 phones refuse to stay constantly connected like
the others.

So I am trying to use 'qualify' to get * to "ping" them to keep them
registered/connected.

I tested it on my phone which is not one of the 2. As soon as I reloaded
sip.conf, I got this:

NOTICE[1087584960]: Peer '3044' is now UNREACHABLE!

And 'sip show peers' shows:

3044/matthew304 62.74.107.1 D N 255.255.255.255 44854
UNREACHABLE

and calls to that phone get pushed to the 'unreachable' category in my
dialplan.

Its been like that for the past 20 min. Why isn't anything happening?
Should't I be getting some notice every 2 seconds (the qualify default) that
something is happening?

Thanks,

Ill give you a few things to try. First try the password "123".or "cisco" (all lowercase) as the default password out of the box.

You said there was an "option to unlock the MGCP function".????

The most common way to unlock a 7960g is to go to the main menu, then scroll down till you see "Unlock Config" and try your passwords there.

If this fails to unlock the phone then first we want to get rid of the network settings so it stops trying to contact whatever random MGCP server you mentioned.

Try **# either at the main screen or while in a menu screen. This should at least unlock the Network Configuration submenu, and in there you can find "Erase Network Configuation". That should wipe all the server information back to 0.0.0.0. Then save and let it restart (or, force it to restart).

Finally

As the phone is starting up, immediately press *and hold* the # key.

Keep it pressed. The phone will flash the three lights for headset, mute, and speaker.

When the speaker light turns off, release the # button.

The phone should flash all three of those lights again. I believe it will keep flashing them for 60 seconds, which indicates it's waiting for you to do something.

Enter 123456789*0#

If it worked, the phone should ask "Keep network cfg?" with options for yes or no. Depends on your exact circumstances, I guess, but the safe answer is probably always "no". Remember, you can always input that stuff again later, but making sure it's gone also ensures that nothing in those settings is screwing you up. You want the phone as clean as possible before you start to work with it.

I bought a used phone configured to MGCP (version POM3-06-00).

the phone is locked. I have tried the following action but with no luck:

Tried performing a factory reset by holding down "#" as it powers up

then i dialed 123456789*0#.

This does not work at all. It is trying to get information from a MGCP source at 64.2.21.61 on port 2727. It never recognizes anything I type (like # or the 123456789*0#)

When I go into the menu display, there is an option to unlock the MGCP function. I have tried several passwords ("Cisco"; "cisco"; Cisco4321"; etc) but still can not get it. I can telnet to the set but I do not have the access password.

The TFTP server does have a valid SCCP image it should try to boot to but doesnt .

Our company has upgraded from a standard office max phone system using analog voice line to a Cisco VoIP solution. Ive read is some reviews that the price was to high but that has changed. The cost of 175 is about the same as your pay for a proffesional business phone from office depot. I liked the large 4" x 3" monochrome LCD display and it doesn't take long to learn how to navigate the menus on the display. The softkeys under the display take some getting used to because some options only desplay after you press the more key. Navigating the address book and sorting through contacts is simple, Ive also used the phone to conference everyone in to listen to something I had to sat. Voice quality is very good atlease if you are running a good network. Its all about how you set it up, the phone itself will put out quality sound.

I've got a
couple of 7940 phones and one SNOM 100, I think I'll be sticking with
the Cisco product as it seems to be more reliable and generally just
works better.
